New campaign: Stop Torture

On Wednesday 14th May, members of the Ealing group attended the UK launch of the new Amnesty International campaign to Stop Torture.

We heard from survivors of torture from the Philippines and Nigeria, a campaigner against torture in Mexico and from Amnesty International UK Director, Kate Allen.  The speakers were truly inspirational and you can see a recording of the launch and their stories here.

Amnesty has been working to end torture for over 50 years – the video above details some of that history.  Sadly, today people just like you and me are subjected to torture and ill-treatment by their governments.  This is despite the fact that many states have signed the Convention against Torture into law and promised to respect the global ban on torture.  This latest campaign is a rallying call to stop torture by seeking the establishment and implementation of effective safeguards against torture as the route to change.

The campaign is focusing on Mexico, Morocco, Nigeria, Philippines and Uzbekistan.

Ealing Amnesty group will be part of this campaign and we’ll be posting more in the coming weeks.
