Thousands stuck in limbo

Amnesty's research has shown the long-term damage immigration detention centres can have on the minds and bodies of those held there. Yet there are thousands incarcerated, often in terrible conditions - with no end in sight.

The uncertainty of not knowing how long detention might last only adds to the distress of all those affected.

The debate on immigration in the UK can no longer ignore the toll the current system takes on the lives and families of detainees. Where detention should be exceptional, it has become the norm. This must stop.
