Commenting on the publication of an independent expert group report on abortion law review, Amnesty International's Scotland Programme Director Liz Thomson said:

"Amnesty welcomes the group's report and urges the Scottish Government to adopt the overarching recommendation that abortion be removed from the criminal justice system and regulated as healthcare.

"This would bring urgently needed modernisation of Scotland's abortion laws so that anyone seeking this basic healthcare is treated with compassion and dignity.

"Around the world and in the UK, Amnesty is documenting an alarming increase in well-funded activity aimed at rolling back reproductive rights.

"As we approach the Scottish Parliamentary election next May we need to see all parties  championing universal access to safe abortion and related care and information, as well as full decriminalisation.
