January 2026 Update

We had a good meeting this evening.  A few things to update you on.

1. We've agreed that we will get an Amnesty Zoom account set up which Steph, Monica and Keith can all use jointly

2. The W4R event was a positive event.  With Allison's event, our stall on 13 Dec, Keith's events and our own meeting, we anticipate having signed 100+ cards and we raised £22.78 on the 13 Dec as well.

3. Lynda will provide an update on our finances following payment for our group's affiliation fee, etc.

4. Keith gave an update on the Gaza situation, summarising events from 1947 partition through to the present day.  It is heartbreaking beyond words.  In addition, the UK government's proscribing of the Palestinian Action Group as a terrorist group and the limiting of our right to free speech/protest is shocking, not to mention the detainees currently being detained without trial and going on hunger strike.  We will be circulating a letter shortly to the Prime Minister for everyone to sign separately.  Ruth suggested that we could look into whether we can show our support for those being detained in the Surrey area - Keith will look into it.

5.  Our next meeting on Monday 2 February will include a speaker, Mel Moss, who spent time in the West Bank last year.

6.  Given the horrendous situation in Venezuela, we also agreed that it would be useful to have a country coordinator speak in the March meeting about the situation there.  Monica will look into it.

7.  Steph will look into setting up a meeting with our MP Will Forster about the Jimmy Lai letter and other Hong Konger rights in the UK.

8.  Steph will also look into working with the Soroptimists.

9.  Amnesty AGM is 27-28 June at the University of Sussex which is doable in a day, so we could organise a group to attend.
