January meeting

AI Exeter group history and good news- click to read more...

At our January meeting we heard good news about prisoners from Sudan, India and Mongolia. Fardous Al Toum had her conviction and sentence (a fine and 20 lashes) for “indecent dress” overturned. Dalit singer, Kovan, was released on bail after being arrested for singing satirical songs, and Mongolia have abolished the death penalty.

We also heard an interesting talk by Pam about the history of the Exeter group, which was founded in September 1961, only four months after AI was started by Peter Benenson. There is a lot of archive information about the group's work over the last 55 years, including letters from a number of prisoners who were released after intervention by Exeter group members.
