Out and About!

With Oxford City Amnesty Group at Burford Levellers Day

As more visitors flock to the Oxfordshire Cotswolds during the summer months, will we be seen out and about in Chipping Norton and our neighbouring towns.

On 17th May we joined the Oxford City Amnesty Group in Burford, marching through the town on Levellers Day.  During the English Civil War, the Levellers fought on Parliament’s side; they were prepared to fight against Cromwell for their ideals and he was determined to crush them. Over 300 of them were captured by Cromwell’s troops and locked up in Burford church. Three were led out into the churchyard to be shot as ringleaders. The Levellers believed in civil rights and religious tolerance and this year the theme was "confronting poverty and injustice".

On 4th June we held a vigil on the steps of Chipping Norton's town hall to commemorate the 36th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre.  Later this month look out for our Amnesty occupation of the red ChippyPhoneBox and for the refugee flag flying in the Millennium Garden on World Refugee Day, 20th June.  Then we head to Woodstock for a street collection on Saturday 21st before being back on home turf in the centre of Chippy with a stall at our Town Festival on Sunday 29th June.

Do come and say hello!
