About this group

Welcome to Bournville Amnesty - a group of supporters of Amnesty International that is based in the Bournville section of Birmingham. The group is number 40 in the official network of Local Groups across the UK (and the rest of the world) that help to push forward Amnesty's work.

at the Quaker Meeting House, 65 Linden Rd, Bournville, Birmingham B30 1JT.

We are a large, active and friendly group. We welcome new members and supporters, whether they are able to attend meetings or not. And you don't have to live in Bournville to be a member. Group members are of all ages, backgrounds, origins, political persuasions, etc.

We lobby governments and other agencies on behalf of individual victims of human rights abuses (notably torture, illegitimate imprisonment and "disappearances") and also campaign on more general issues such as the death penalty, refugees and arms exports. Our current activities involve:

• writing letters to governments in countries where Amnesty receives confirmed reports of human rights abuses
• organising fundraising events (book stalls, socials, concerts, walks)
• pressuring the British government to protect the human rights of people in this country (asylum seekers, for example) and abroad
• promoting awareness of human rights at events put on by other organisations (e.g.Freedom from Torture [was Medical Foundation for the Care of Victims of Torture]; Gay Pride; refugee organisations).

Because we do a lot of things there are many ways to contribute. Whether you are good at writing, organising, public speaking or baking cakes for stalls we can find a way to put your talents to good use!

Our group has a lot of experience through being one of the earliest to be formed in the history of Amnesty. Amnesty was born in 1961, and our group in 1964.

Amnesty International as a whole, and of course our group as well, is apolitical in not being aligned with or supporting any specific political party or movement on the national or world stage. Amnesty is politically entirely impartial in how it acts towards governments and other bodies.
