In 2013, Shawkan was arrested in Egypt and has been in prison ever since. His crime? Simply doing his job as a photojournalist and trying to show the world what was happening in his country. We urgently need your help to secure his release.

Tell the Egyptian authorities to drop the charges and release Shawkan immediately and unconditionally.

The situation

Rabaa massacre

Mahmoud Abu Zeid, known as Shawkan, was 25 when he was arrested just for doing his job in August 2013. He was covering a sit-in protest which turned into the Rabaa massacre when Egypt’s security forces burst in, killing hundreds of protesters.

Beaten, accused of trumped up charges and detained ever since, Shawkan is being punished for trying to show the world what was happening in his country.

Freedom of expression

Shawkan has now lost almost four years – an eighth of his life – in Egypt’s brutal Tora prison.

We are demanding that the Egyptian authorities release Shawkan immediately and unconditionally, and respect, protect and uphold the right to freedom of expression in Egypt.
