Major Asylum and Immigration Proposals

The Government has announced proposals for sweeping and harmful changes to the immigration and asylum systems. It is consulting on some of these changes but not others.

Its proposals will harm refugees and many other migrants, also their children (including children born in the UK) and their families (including British citizens).

Amnesty International UK strongly opposes these changes, which will harm many people and harm society more widely. It is very important that we should all express our clear objection to them - by responding to the consultation, writing to our MPs, raising awareness with friends, families and colleagues.

The following material has been produced to help with raising objection and awareness of these proposed changes:

1. An RMR Briefing explaining the proposed changes to the asylum system

2. An RMR Briefing explaining the proposed changes to whether and after how long migrant people may be permitted to become permanent residents in the UK

3. Guidance on how to respond to the Government's consultation on the pathway to settlement (how someone may become a permanent resident)

4. Alternative template letters to MPs about (i) changes to the asylum system; (ii) charges to the immigration system; and (iii) changes to both systems
