Guidance for responding to 'A Fairer Pathway to Settlement' consultation
The Home Office has issued proposals for major changes to whether refugees and migrants in the UK may ever be permitted to become settled here - i.e., whether they may become permanent residents (which is also necessary to apply to be naturalised as a British citizen).
In summary, the proposals are dreadful. They are intended and would make life considerably harsher, more uncertain, more marginalised for many refugees and migrants in the UK. The Government generally intends to make refugees and migrants unwelcome in the UK unless they are regarded as highly skilled or relatively wealthy.
There is a consultation on some of these proposals. There is an online survey to respond to that consultation no later than 23.59 hours on 12 February 2026.
This Guidance is to help people respond to the consultation. It can be downloaded from the link below. It briefly explains what is proposed, indicates how Amnesty recommends responding, and explains why. Numbers really matter. Please use this Guidance and make a response.
