UK-US: 'Silence is not an option' - Starmer must challenge Trump's anti-rights agenda at meeting in Scotland

'Silence is not an option' placard by Amnesty International

Responding to Prime Minister Starmer’s upcoming meeting with President Trump in Scotland on Monday, Sacha Deshmukh, Chief Executive of Amnesty International UK, said:

“We are at a critical crossroads in the global struggle against authoritarianism, and Sir Keir Starmer must use every tool at his disposal to confront Donald Trump’s escalating anti-rights agenda.

“The Trump administration’s systematic dismantling of international human rights norms - from withdrawing the US from the Human Rights Council, the WHO, and the Paris Agreement, to sanctioning International Criminal Court officials - is a blatant attack on accountability and international justice. We cannot stand by while these protections are stripped away.

“Starmer must also speak out on the US governments support for Israel’s genocide in Gaza and urge Trump to pressure Israel to change course. As mass starvation spreads amidst Israel’s genocide, silence and inaction is not an option.

“This is a test of leadership and commitment to human rights. History will remember not just what was said, but what was done.”
