UK: Home Office questions highlight 'inhumane' refugee family reunion rules

Today in Parliament the Home Secretary, Sajid Javid, responded to oral questions on the Government’s approach to refugee family reunion, with MPs calling the current immigration rules ‘inhumane’ and demanding urgently-needed reforms.

Lucy Wake, Amnesty International UK’s Government Relations Manager, said:

“There is clear cross-party support and urgency for reuniting refugees with their loved ones.

“Existing immigration rules means refugee families are torn apart by unfair laws. Child refugees have no right to reunite with their loved ones. Others will struggle to gather the necessary paperwork or will not be able to afford legal help.

“We welcome that the Home Secretary is considering Bills before the house to change these restrictive rules. We would urge him to consider quickly so that more families can be reunited in safety.”
