Belfast: Reports of Chinese-operated ‘police station’ must be thoroughly investigated
'Any Chinese "police station" being used to spy on HK and mainland Chinese communities in Belfast or anywhere else in the UK must be shut down immediately' - Patrick Corrigan
In response to reports of a Chinese “police station” being operated in Belfast, Patrick Corrigan, Amnesty International’s Northern Ireland Programme Director, said:
“The UK government must make it absolutely clear to the Chinese authorities at the highest levels that it will not tolerate the long arm of Chinese state oppression here.
“Any Chinese ‘police station’ being used to spy on Hong Kong and mainland Chinese communities in Belfast - or anywhere else in the UK - must be shut down immediately.
“The police should thoroughly investigate all potentially unlawful activity by Chinese officials and keep at-risk communities fully informed of their actions.
“The UK authorities need to steadfastly protect Hong Kong and mainland Chinese people against any intimidation by Beijing, including by ensuring that their rights to freedom of expression and peaceful activism here in Belfast are fully upheld.”
