Write for Rights 2025

Unecebo Mboteni

Warrington Amnesty held a card and letter signing for Write for Rights at Stockton Heath Methodist church hall on 7th December. Three cases were chosen and participants signed cards with appropriate messages of solidarity and support.

One case from South Africa was that of three year old Unecebo Mboteni who died at his pre-school after falling down a pit toilet. Pre-schools in the poorer areas are excluded from official sanitation plans set by the Department of Basic Education so rely on pit toilets. Unecebo's death reflects the ongoing inequality in South Africa's education system where the poorest and youngest remain at risk.

Unecebo's parents have sought justice for their son since it happened in April 2024 but, to date, no one has been held accountable. We sent cards to his parents to support them in their struggle to get justice for their son. We also asked participants at the event to sign a letter to the Department of Basic Education in South Africa to ask them to review his case and end the use of pit toilets in pre-schools.

It was very successful and well attended by members of the church and Amnesty. Tea, coffee and home made cake was enjoyed as everyone discussed the cases and signed the cards and letter. This was a repeat of last year's event and it is hoped to do the same in December 2026.
