Marking Human Rights Day in Minehead

The Minehead Group held their usual annual coffee morning on 9 December - as near International Human Rights Day (10 December) as we could manage. Visitors signed cards and letters for the Write for Rights 2022 campaign, and also enjoyed coffee and home-made cakes.

This weekend marks the launch by the International Secretariat of Amnesty International of a year-long campaign for the release in India of the BK16, of whom 11 are still actually in prison, one is under house arrest due to medical issues, 3 are on bail under strictly controlled conditions and one unfortunately died. To coincide with the launch we included a small display at our WfR coffee morning on 9 December.

Cherry Bird, who is a member of the Minehead Group and also AIUK's volunteer country coordinator for India, posted this message: On International Human Rights Day we must not forget that the crackdown against human rights defenders in India continues unabated.11 activists in the Bhima Koregaon case remain imprisoned without trial, simply because they spoke up for the rights of the most marginalized in the country. If you use social media please act now to demand their release. #FreeBK16 @AmitShah
