NAFRAN

The Group has been a member of the North African Regional Action Network (NARAN) for many years.  This is one of the networks by which AI organises its work.  Local groups undertake to work especially in one area of the world.  NAFRAN covers Morocco, Algeria, Libya, Tunisia and Egypt.

We are committed to undertake one action a month, and if possible in addition respond to any Urgent Actions (UAs) or special requests for that area.  The instructions come from AIUK.  Usually we are requested to write letters to the authorities;  sometimes we get these letters, or petitions, signed by the public at locally held stalls.

Actions usually are written on behalf of individuals but sometimes on general themes such as torture or repression or protests about human rights abuses.  Recently we have written to Tunisia, Egypt and Morocco covering such cases as imprisonment of prisoners of conscience, “disappearance” and suspected incommunicado detention, prisoners needing immediate medical care (in one instance as a result of torture), and requests for trials to be fair in accordance with international standards.

Normally the campaign co-ordinator distributes instructions for action by e-mail.  If you want to take part in this campaign, please contact:  hornseywoodgreenaiuk@gmail.com
