Town Fair Muster Green 2023

Amnesty International Stall June 11th 2023 Haywards Heath

Below is the content of the leaflet handed out at Muster Green Haywards Heath Town Fair. It explains why we are concerned that human rights in the UK are being eroded. If you agree, spread the word!

AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL UK

Human rights are the fundamental rights and freedoms that belong to every single
one of us, anywhere in the world. Human rights apply no matter where you are from,
what you believe in, or how you choose to live your life.

Human rights can never be taken away, but they can sometimes be restricted – for
example if a person breaks the law, or in the interests of national security. These
rights and freedoms are based on values like dignity, fairness, equality, respect and
independence. But human rights are not just abstract concepts – they are defined
and protected by law.

Among threats to our human rights in the UK are:-
Global warming – the greatest threat to human rights in the 21st century
It is now beyond doubt that global warming causing climate change is adversely
affecting a broad range of human rights that are recognised and protected under
international law. Rising sea levels, increasing temperatures, extreme weather and
changing rainfall patterns are undermining an ever-increasing number of people's
and communities’ rights to food, water, health, shelter, development, and life.

Public Order Act 2023
A senior Tory has attacked his party’s own newly passed anti-protest law as “too
crude” and “poorly defined” after police faced a backlash over its use to
arrest coronation protesters. Former minister David Davis said the arrest of six
demonstrators, from the group Republic, was an example of flaws in the new law.

Elections Act 2022
A new law introduced voter ID, further restricted civil society campaigning in the run-
up to elections, and weakened the independence of the Electoral Commission. This
undermines the right to free elections and the prohibition on discrimination.

THE BASICS OF HUMAN RIGHTS
Human rights have some key qualities, agreed by the international community. They
are recognised as:
• Universal: they belong to every single person
• Inalienable: they cannot be taken away from us
• Indivisible and interdependent: governments should not be able to pick and
choose which rights are respected.

AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL SUPPORTS HUMAN RIGHTS FOR ALL OF US
