About this group

Welcome

The East Devon Group includes forty members and  supporters spread around the towns of  Budleigh Salterton,Honiton,Ottery St Mary,Seaton,Sidmouth , and the villages and countryside around. Membership is free but donations are welcome.

We meet in Twyford House ,Coburg Road Sidmouth  at 7:30 pm on the third Thursday of each month. There is no meeting in August and December. We welcome new members and enquiries about membership. Just come along to a meeting;,the entrance is via the front of the building (not the yard).   Alternatively contact us by phone or email (see contacts). You do not have to be an Amnesty UK individual member to join us.

We campaign for Human Rights by supporting the campaigns of Amnesty UK by writing letters of support from the group to prisoners of conscience  all over the world  and to those individuals and groups suffering abuses of their human rights.  We also write to their governments and embassies and to our MPs and to the Foreign Office. These UK and Worldwide campaigns are extremely effective as prisoners testify that their improved conditions and eventual release was often due to the publicity and pressure exerted by  worldwide  Amnesty campaigns.

Our other activities are geared towards raising local awareness of Human Rights abuses.  We have stalls at the the Sidmouth Folk Festival and at events in Honiton, Seaton and Budleigh Salterton. Members of the group also give talks in schools and to other voluntary clubs and organisations.  During the year we invite speakers to talk to the group and the public on human rights topics. Some of the foreign speakers have first hand knowledge of the conditions in their country.

We also raise money for Amnesty UK and for our group’s campaigning by running fund raising events such as the famous Amnesty Branscombe Supper. The aim is for our work to be both worthwhile and enjoyable.
