Shooting at Nangpa la Pass

Video footage from ProTV in Romania shows one of the line of Tibetan refugees falling suddenly to the snow. It was a 17-year old nun and she was killed.  There have been rumours of shootings like this before but this is the first time that there have been witnesses from various countries, including Danish and British climbers and a television crew as well. The official Chinese line from People's Daily on 13 October is that the shooting was in self-defence. Have a look at the video if it is still available and make up your own mind.

Finally at long last the Chinese government realised that they would have to punish the army officer responsible for the shooting. The punishment reminds me of Monty Python's sketch about the Spanish Inquisition ("No, not the comfy chair, anything but the comfy chair") for they decided to give him early retirement.
