Dear Prime Minister,

I am writing to share my seriously held concerns about the current immigration bill, and to urge that you reconsider and drop this incredibly harmful legislation.

The bill – which has completed its passage through the Commons at an alarming speed and without time for proper scrutiny - will turn its back on the UK’s legal and moral responsibilities to protect some of the most vulnerable seeking safety from persecution or exploitation, as well as many other disadvantaged people.

This bill takes a sledgehammer to the UK’s obligations under the 1951 Refugee Convention and European Convention on Human Rights. It disapplies human rights protections from people that need them the most and the Home Secretary herself has openly admitted that she cannot declare its compatibility with Convention standards. It will also remove vital judicial oversight in some of the most sensitive cases – including when it comes to detention, even where the person held is a child.

The bill is a Charter for modern slavery. It will fail to do the very thing it supposedly sets out to do. By effectively shutting down the UK’s asylum system, and intentionally excluding people from accessing our vital modern slavery protections, many vulnerable people will be forced to live in fear and secrecy – the perfect conditions in which human exploitation thrives. Ultimately, I share the concerns of many that this harmful approach will only put people back into the hands of the very same criminals and abusers you are allegedly trying to stop.

Lastly, I want to raise the issue of the very serious and harmful rhetoric coming from members of your government  and the wider press. For months, this inflammatory language has only stirred-up division and furthered hatred against some of the most vulnerable who seek safety in the UK. Using words such as ‘invasion’ is not acceptable, and I implore you to condemn it in the strongest terms whenever it occurs.

As the bill progresses into its next stages, I hope that you will seriously consider my concerns and put a stop to this bill.
