Target: Minister of Justice Akın Gürlek

Dear Minister of Justice Akın Gürlek,

Your information will be held by Amnesty International UK Section and Amnesty International UK Section Charitable Trust. We will never sell or swap your personal information with anyone else. For campaign petitions, we may display your first name and last name on the petition when we hand it in to the individual or group to whom it is addressed. Read more about how we use your information at amnesty.org.uk/privacy-notice.

One message can make all the difference. Think of how a message of support can inspire strength on a difficult day. Now imagine what your words could mean to Şebnem, a human rights defender facing persecution in Turkey.

Şebnem has spent her life fighting for human rights and the eradication of torture. But the Turkish government is cracking down on freedom of expression, subjecting Şebnem to baseless investigations, detentions, and prosecutions in an effort to silence her.

In 2022, she spoke out on live TV about Türkiye’s use of chemical weapons in Iraq and Syria. For that, she was detained and charged.

Now, she faces almost two years in prison if her appeal is unsuccessful. Şebnem’s only crime is standing up for what’s right – and for that, she’s being punished.

Freedom of expression is a human right, and your message could help secure Şebnem’s freedom for good. Writing to the Turkish authorities could be the action that leads to real change.

Since Write for Rights began in 2001, millions of messages have brought hope and sparked real change. More than 100 individuals have seen positive outcomes thanks to collective action.

Join us today in demanding that the Turkish authorities stop harassing Şebnem. Every message sends a message – to those in power, and to those fighting for their rights.
