The government is using lies and hate-filled language that will stoke flames of division, hatred and could end with more violence. We cannot allow this to happen.

The bill will not only undermine all of our rights but also achieve unspeakable damage to people and communities. These include those seeking safety from persecution or exploitation and many other disadvantaged people. We demand that the government end their callous treatment towards people in need and put a stop to their campaign of hate.

Together, we must raise our voices and make a stand for what is right.

I am writing as your constituent to express my serious concerns about the Government’s Illegal Migration Bill, and to ask for your support in promptly raising these with the Leader of your Party and during the upcoming Committee Stage.

While I believe there to be several significant issues with the bill, I am particularly concerned that it:

1. Breaks the UK’s obligations under international law: this bill breaks our basic legal duties under the Refugee Convention 1951 and the European Convention on Human Rights. The Home Secretary herself has openly acknowledged that the Government cannot even state that it is compatible with our international human rights commitments. The UK hails itself as a champion of freedom and human rights, so how can they expect to lawfully press forwards with this proposed legislation? If anything, it is as if the Government is using this Bill as yet another way to build public support for taking us out of the Convention.

2. Is a Charter for human exploitation: the Government claims that this bill will do anything to protect people needing safety who make the journey to the UK at the hands of smugglers and criminal gangs are clearly false. Under these plans, people arriving in these circumstances will be excluded from the UK’s modern slavery protections and even its basic human rights law, and instead will face detention and subsequent removal or permanent limbo in the UK. This will prevent exploited people from seeking help and drive those that do escape back into the hands of the criminals and abusers.

3. Stirs-up division and targets some of the most marginalised in our society: the proposals in this bill are inhumane and seek to stir-up further hatred against certain groups, including some of the most vulnerable who seek safety in the UK. This division has only been worsened by some of the harmful rhetoric and inflammatory language used in the press and by parliamentarians – including from the Home Secretary.

While I hope you will very much agree with my concerns, I urge you to put these on record and encourage your colleagues in Parliament to do the same.
