Urgent Action Update: Myanmer prisoner of conscience released

Political activist Htin Kyaw has been released from prison following a Presidential pardon in Myanmar on 17 April, as part of a Presidential pardon which saw the release of 83 prisoners.

Urgent Action good news: Six Myanmer activists have been released

Human rights activists Naw Ohn Hla, San San Win (aka Lay Lay), Sein Htwe, Nay Myo Zin, Tin Htut Paing and Than Swe were released from Insein prison in Yangon, Myanmar’s largest city, on 17 April.

An Egyptian military court is preparing to sentence eight men to death after a grossly unfair trial. The men are standing trial on terrorism-related charges with 20 others, in a case also marred by torture and enforced disappearances.

Five student activists from the University of Khartoum in Sudan have been detained without charge in Khartoum North since 13 and 14 April after being arrested by the National Intelligence Security Service (NISS). They are at risk of torture and other ill-treatment.

Urgent Action update: activist given four month suspended sentence

Dr. Albissaty Salhe Alazam arrested and detained on 4 April for his participation in organising a peaceful demonstration that took place on 5 April in N’Djamena, Chad, has received a four month suspended prison sentence.

Urgent Action: Prisoner of conscience must be released

A prisoner of conscience is being held in military custody in Thailand, with no access to lawyers or family. This is the third time since 2 March that Watana Muangsook has been held in military detention without charge or trial.

Urgent Action update: Iranian trade unionist faces sixteen years in jail

Ismail Abdi, Secretary General of Iran’s Teachers’ Trade Association, has been sentenced on charges related to his peaceful trade union activities. He is awaiting an appeal date and has announced he will go on hunger strike on International Workers’ Day on 1 May to protest the repression of trade unionists.

Urgent Action update: Ibrahim Karimi Sentenced to prison

Ibrahim Karimi has been sentenced to two years and one month in prison on charges including “publicly insulting the King” which he has denied. He will be at immediate risk of expulsion after he completes his sentence as his nationality was arbitrarily revoked.

Union leaders and factory workers Myo Min Min and Naing Htay Lwin, and labour activists Naing Zaw Kyi Win and Thu Zaw Kyi Win were released from Insein prison in Yangon, Myanmer on 17 April.
