Urgent Action: Detained media workers charged with defamation in Myanmar

Two media workers have been detained and charged with “online defamation’’ in connection with a satirical article mocking the Myanmar Army. They each face up to three years’ imprisonment if found guilty and convicted.

Urgent Action update: Natalya Sharina victim of travesty of justice in Russian Federation

On 5 June, Natalya Sharina, ex-Director of the Ukrainian Library in Moscow, was found guilty of “incitement of hatred and enmity” and “embezzlement” and given four years suspended sentence.

Urgent Action good news: Torture survivor released in Chechnya

Murad Amriev was handed over to Russian law enforcement officers at 3am on 9 June after having been returned from Belarus where he unsuccessfully attempted to claim asylum. He has been released on bail on condition that he does not leave Chechnya.

Three labour activists who were conducting undercover research investigations into the labour conditions at Huajian shoe factories, which supply to Ivanka Trump’s brand among others, were taken away by the authorities in Ganzhou, Jiangxi Province in late May.

Urgent Action: Hundreds stranded at Mexico–Guatemala border

Approximately 400 people from rural Guatemala are stranded at the Mexico-Guatemala border in temporary shelters and tents, without adequate access to water, food, or medical supplies, after a Guatemalan court order was executed to evict them.

Update Belarus: Chechen man at risk if extradited from Belarus

Chechen torture survivor Murad Amriev was detained on the night of 7 June as he attempted to enter Belarus. The Chechen authorities have asked for his extradition to Russia to face charges in Grozny, the Chechen capital.
