
Urgent Action good news: Activist and his lawyer released without charge in DRC
Jean-Marie Kalonji, an activist with the youth movement Quatrieme voie/ il est temps, and his colleague and lawyer Sylva Mbikayi were released without charge on 17 July. The two had been held in incommunicado detention by military intelligence agents since 23 June.

Urgent Action update: Several men arbitrarily held in poor conditions in South Sudan
George Livio Bahara, one of the men arbitrarily detained at a prison at the National Security Service (NSS) headquarters in Juba, was released on 25 May. Mike Tyson, another detainee, died on 29 June at the NSS prison.

Urgent Action update: Court stays mental exam of university lecturer in Uganda
Dr Stella Nyanzi, an academic and feminist, will not be subjected to a mental health examination after a magistrate court ordered a stay of the examination on 25 May. Dr Stella Nyanzi was released on conditional bail by the same court on 10 May.

Urgent Action: Maldives to resume executions after over 60 years
Sources close to the government of Maldives have confirmed that executions in the country will resume on 21 July 2017. The Maldives Supreme Court has upheld the convictions and death sentences of three men, who are all now at imminent risk of execution.

Urgent Action: Resumption of executions looms in Ohio
Ronald Phillips is scheduled to be executed in Ohio on 26 July. He was sentenced to death in 1993 for a murder committed earlier that year when he was 19 years old. He is now 43. This would be the first execution in Ohio in three and a half years.

Urgent Action: Arbitrary detainees on hunger strike in Venezuela
The physical integrity and lives of 14 police officers arbitrarily detained for politically motivated reasons are at risk in Venezuela, since they began a hunger strike 23 days ago to demand that authorities execute their pending release warrant.

Yussuf al-Mushaikhass was executed on 11 July without the family being informed. His death sentence was handed down following a grossly unfair trial at Saudi Arabia’s counter-terror court.

An appeal court has upheld the death sentence against Abdulkareem al-Hawaj, a Shi’a man who was convicted of offences committed when he was 16 years old. The court appears to have based its sentence on forced “confessions”.

Urgent Action update: In Singapore, Malaysian man hanged in hurried, secretive manner
Prabagaran Srivijayan, a Malaysian national was executed at dawn on 14 July 2017 at Changi Prison, in Singapore. Contrary to international standards, he was sentenced to the mandatory death penalty in 2012 for a drug related offence.
