Submission to the Press Recognition Panel on press reporting
This submission explains how current news reporting practices, particularly around immigration, asylum, race, and human rights, are causing serious harm to individuals and communities, contributing to social hostility and violence, and undermining public understanding of the law and human rights.
It identifies systemic weaknesses in complaints and redress mechanisms and highlights the growing role of platform amplification and AI in intensifying these harms.
We propose areas for practical improvement to press standards and redress mechanisms, while reaffirming the crucial importance of press freedom and independent journalism.
