Briefing: Amendment of the International Criminal Court Act 2001

Amnesty International UK is advocating for a change to UK law which would help bring to justice those responsible for the world’s gravest crimes.

Together with Redress, the International Bar Association’s Human Rights Institute and others, we have produced this joint briefing on universal jurisdiction. It proposes amendments to the International Criminal Court Act 2001 so that suspects of war crimes, crimes against humanity or genocide could be prosecuted if they are in the UK, even if they are not a UK resident or UK national.

A Crime and Policing Bill now passing through Parliament provides an immediate opportunity. Two relevant amendments (one for England and Wales, one for Northern Ireland) have already been tabled in the House of Lords by the Chair of the Joint Committee on Human Rights. Please contact members of the House of Lords and/or your Member of Parliament to express support for this change to UK law.
