Ukraine: Foreign journalist ban an 'assault on freedom of expression'

The Ukrainian government’s decision to ban dozens of foreign journalists from entering the country on the grounds that they are a threat to national security is an assault on freedom of expression, said Amnesty International today.

Denis Krivosheev, Amnesty International’s Deputy Director for Europe and Central Asia, said:

“The decision to ban dozens of journalists sets a dangerous precedent. Increasingly the space for journalists to work in, as well the public’s access to information, is becoming seriously restricted.

“This is a particularly alarming attack on journalists’ freedom of movement. The Ukrainian government must take the steps necessary to ensure full and free reporting by journalists covering the unfolding situation in the country.”
