UK: Reaction to Mori opinion poll on torture

“These are deeply worrying findings. Let’s be clear what we are talking about here: this is not about whether evidence is useful. This is about whether it is okay to throw someone in a cell and inflict pain and terror upon them until they ‘break’ and tell their tormentors what they want to hear.

“Torture is an abhorrent practice and is never acceptable - no matter what the circumstances, no matter who is the torturer or the victim.

“People are losing sight of the horrific reality of torture – enabling the UK to turn a blind eye to other countries’ torture records by seeking ‘Memoranda of Understanding’ with countries like Algeria.

“What this country should be doing is opposing torture in all its forms and helping to root out the practice around the world, not undermining the global ban on torture.”
