UK: Passports withdrawn from two former Guantánamo detainees – reaction

Amnesty International UK Director Kate Allen said:

"The onus is on the UK authorities to show that decisions over passports removals and other matters are not reliant on ‘torture evidence’ obtained at Guantánamo Bay.

"Furthermore, we believe there should be an investigation into the role played by the UK in the detention of UK residents and nationals and possibly many others at Guantánamo Bay.

"We remain concerned that UK intelligence officers may have taken advantage of the legal limbo in which detainees were held at Guantanamo to interrogate them in the absence of any safeguards.

"It would be quite wrong for British officials to make use of information extracted under torture at Guantánamo."
