Sajid Javid must focus on reforming 'hostile culture' underpinning UK's broken immigration system

Amnesty International sets out top priorities for the new Home Secretary

As the new Home Secretary Sajid Javid takes office, Kate Allen, Amnesty International UK's Director, said:

“We look forward to working with Sajid Javid on reforming the UK’s broken immigration system and the hostile culture underpinning it.

“Windrush exposed just how damaging the UK’s policies have been to individuals living in this country. The new Home Secretary must now ensure that Commonwealth citizens receive their British citizenship quickly and that other people are not subjected to similar treatment.

“We also urge Mr Javid to prioritise reforming this country’s restrictive refugee family reunion policy, drop the deeply unfair immigration exemption in the Data Protection Bill, and stop the routine use of indefinite immigration detention. He must also ensure that across the UK all women at risk of violence are able to access services and protection regardless of immigration status.”
