Home Office must adopt MPs' proposals to improve refugees' plight in Britain

Responding to the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Refugees report that highlighted a “two-tier” system of refugee protection, Steve Symonds, Amnesty International UK’s programme director for refugees and migrant's rights, said:

“This report is both welcome and timely, particularly in highlighting the inconsistency at the heart of the Government’s approach to refugee integration to date.

“Refugees who arrive by a resettlement programme rightly receive significant support to find their way in a new country and community.

“But by contrast, the great majority of refugees given sanctuary in the UK spend months or years being marginalised because of our asylum system, only to then be largely abandoned.

“They have fled from the same terror and torture as those who are resettled, but they are currently denied the same support and encouragement.

“The Home Office should back the report to help Britain welcome those fleeing persecution and conflict in their own countries.”
