Gordon Brown's speech: call for action on human rights

Responding to Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s conference speech today, Kate Allen, Amnesty International UK Director, speaking from Bournemouth, said:

“Gordon Brown's strong words on the importance of human rights, and his message to the people of Darfur, Zimbabwe and Burma are very welcome. Human rights should be at the heart of British foreign policy.

“These words should be backed by strong action closer to home. The UK must not return asylum-seekers to countries like Zimbabwe and Iraq where they face the very real threat of human rights abuse.

“And Britain should help Syria and Jordan support the millions of people forced to flee their homes in Iraq.”
