Binyam Mohamed: Met investigation welcome but further probe needed

Decision should be ‘just the first step’

Amnesty International today (10 July) welcomed news that the Metropolitan Police will investigate claims that British agents colluded in the torture of former Guantanamo Bay detainee Binyam Mohamed.

Amnesty International UK Campaigns Director Tim Hancock said:

“We welcome the police investigation into allegations that UK agents colluded in torture. Anyone who is complicit in this vile practice should be held accountable no matter where nor who they are.

“But the allegations go far wider than this one case. We need a full, independent investigation into all claims that the UK colluded in human rights abuses in the ‘war on terror’, including torture, rendition and illegal detention.”

Amnesty is asking people to join its campaign for a full investigation into UK involvement in torture, at www.amnesty.org.uk/mohamed
