Amnesty's media awards 2012 winners to be announced tomorrow (Tues 29 May, 10pm)

Amnesty International UK will be announcing the winners of its prestigious annual Media Awards at 10pm tomorrow (Tuesday 29 May).

The awards event, being presented this year by Sky News’ Dermot Murnaghan, will see hundreds of journalists and human rights activists gathering at the BFI in central London to hear 12 awards announced in 11 categories, covering digital, broadcast and print media.

The coveted awards recognise excellence in human rights reporting and acknowledge journalism’s significant contribution to the UK public’s awareness and understanding of human rights issues.

Past winners have included Ghaith Abdul-Ahad, Lucy Ash, Andrew Gilligan, Lindsey Hilsum, Alan Johnston, Sue Lloyd-Roberts, Eamonn McCann, Jonathan Miller, Gaby Rado and Mike Thomson (more information at: www.amnesty.org.uk/mediaawards ).

On the shortlist for an award this year are a host of leading journalists and media companies, as well as several important new up-and-coming reporters. These include the Bureau of Investigative Journalism, Evan Williams, Unreported World’s Jenny Kleeman, the Guardian’s Paul Lewis and Rob Evans, the Independent’s Jerome Taylor, Channel 4, the BBC’s Mike Thomson, Radio 5 Live’s Victoria Derbyshire show, Index on Censorship, and the Sunday Times’ Marie Colvin (for full list of those shortlisted, see: www.amnesty.org.uk/news_details.asp?NewsID=20086 .

Last year’s Media Awards went to BBC Radio 4, the Belfast Telegraph, the Bureau of Investigative Journalism, Channel 4 News, CNN International, the Guardian, Guardian Weekend Magazine, GQ Magazine, the Independent, Marie Claire, More 4, the Sunday Times Magazine and VERITA Magazine.
