Fire Up
Amnesty supporters will gather near City Hall, London at 4.30pm on Saturday 6 December for “Fire Up”, one of dozens of celebratory, visual events around the world to mark the UDHR60. They will assemble in the shape of Amnesty’s iconic ‘Candle and barbed wire’ logo, each holding glow-sticks to illuminate the candle and form a powerful image in the square.
Similar events are being organised by Amnesty members in Australia; Austria; Bangladesh; Belgium; Burkina Faso; Canada; France; Germany; Greece; Hungary; Iceland; India; Netherlands; Paraguay; Portugal; Slovakia; Slovenia and Taiwan.

Candle image
Amnesty can offer to media a powerful image taken by Amnesty Belgium, of a record-breaking candlelit vigil in which the Amnesty logo was recreated using 26,105 candles (June 2008).

Amnesty International and iceandfire Protect the Human Playwriting competition
The winner of the competition will be announced at an event at Amnesty’s Human Rights Action Centre on Tuesday 9th December at 6.15pm as part of celebrations to mark the UDHR anniversary. The announcement will be accompanied by a reading of extracts from the winning play and an exclusive preview of Declaration (below).
The competition was founded in 2007 by Amnesty and iceandfire to offer writers the opportunity to harness theatre’s ability to make real and relevant the impact of human rights on our everyday lives. The winner will receive a prize of £3,000 and readings of their play at venues across the UK on 10 December.

Declaration
A collaborative artwork by Peter Kennard and Jenny Matthews made for the Human Rights Action Centre to commemorate 60 years of the UDHR. The installation consists of floor-to-ceiling newsprint banners printed with words of the UDHR, filling the ground floor of the building. Tearing through the words are photos of the faces of people from all over the world who are struggling for their human rights.

Schools
A UDHR education pack has been received by more than 4,000 schools. They will be celebrating the birthday of ‘Our rights’ in various ways: from showing a DVD to a whole day of human rights teaching and activities, from now until 10 December.
