Required Kit

What you need will vary depending on the length and difficulty of your trek. We’ve kept this list minimal - you can add to it as you progress in your training.

1. Walking Boots

Invest in proper walking boots that suit your challenge and provide sufficient comfort. If your trek involves significant climbing or descending, go for boots with high ankle support and a firm heel for stability.

When buying boots:

  • Shop in the afternoon or evening (your feet swell during the day)
  • Wear the same socks you’ll use during the trek
  • Try on multiple brands - each has a different fit
  • Try both boots - one foot is often larger than the other

2. Poles

Poles help reduce strain on your legs, especially during descents. Spend at least £25 - cheaper ones tend to wear out quickly.

3. Clothing

Layering is essential to adapt to changing conditions throughout the day - from chilly mornings to warm afternoons and cooler evenings.

  • Trekking shirts: Opt for breathable, quick-drying fabrics like polyester, merino, or nylon. Avoid cotton.
  • Hiking trousers/shorts: Convertible trousers that zip off into shorts are a great option.
  • Windbreaker: A lightweight, wind-proof shell is ideal.
  • Waterproofs: Bring a jacket and trousers that can handle heavy rain.
  • Headgear/Sun hat: Choose a wide-brimmed, packable hat for sun protection.
  • Gloves: Lightweight, waterproof gloves are useful for warmth or sun protection.

4. Rucksack

A good rucksack will transfer weight to your hips for comfort and support.

5. Hydration

Aim to drink at least 2 litres of water a day (more in hot weather). You can carry this with 2 × 1-1.5 litre bottles or a hydration bladder system that holds 2-3 litres.

Other Accessories

  • Sweat-resistant sunscreen (SPF 30+) and sun-protection lip balm
  • Insect repellent
  • Wet wipes – for cleaning your hands or wiping down post-trek
  • Dry plastic bags – useful for separating wet and dry gear; zip-lock bags for valuables
  • Blister plasters – essential for long days on your feet. Treat blisters early to prevent worsening
