It was September 2020, and Dorgelesse was struggling to earn enough in her job as a hairdresser to care for her son and her mum, who both live with serious health problems.
She remembers seeing many others around her in Cameroon struggling too. “Teachers were having a hard time, and doctors,” she says. “Everything was falling apart”.
In what should have been a simple act of humanity, Dorgelesse decided to join a peaceful protest.
She’d never done that before. But she felt the time had come to voice her unhappiness publicly and stand up for those around her. She wanted to be heard.
Instead, however, the day of the protest turned into a living nightmare that has never ended.
Dorgelesse was arrested, imprisoned and given a five-year sentence. She had committed no crime and her trial in a military court denied her fundamental human rights. She has spent every day since trapped in a cramped, dirty cell, far from the family she has always been there to care for.
