I call on the Prime Minister to abandon plans to ’overhaul’ the Human Rights Act.
The Human Rights Act protects all of us, all of the time. It protects the most basic and important things – like freedom of expression, liberty and family life. It ensures that public authorities like Government departments, local authorities, and the NHS respect these fundamental rights, and empowers people to enforce their rights in UK courts if they fail to.
The UK Government’s plans will make it more difficult for public bodies to uphold rights and for ordinary people to challenge decisions that violate their human rights. These proposals must be scrapped, and the Human Rights Act safeguarded instead.

Save Our Human Rights Act

The UK government is officially scrapping our Human Rights Act. Now more than ever we need to come together in the fight to save our rights. Take action to save our Human Rights Act.
The UK government is planning to replace the Human Rights Act with a ‘Bill of Rights’. This ‘Bill’ will seriously weaken our own rights and only make things better for those in power.
It’ll also make it harder to hold other countries to account - at a time where it's needed more than ever.
We’ve already seen this power grab playing out. The recently passed Policing Bill will now make it harder to stand up to power. Now more than ever we need to come together in the fight to save our rights.
Our Human Rights Act protects all of us. It brings home fundamental, universal rights we all have as human beings, and allows us to challenge authorities if they violate them. It’s an invisible safety net, working to ensure our rights are respected. It is a crucial defence for the most vulnerable.
We know the Human Rights Act works. It worked for the Hillsborough families in their fight for justice. It worked for the victims of John Worboys. It worked to overturn the near total ban on abortion in Northern Ireland. We don’t need to change it.
Behind all the technical language, the UK government is trying to gut our Human Rights Act - leaving us with an empty shell that will seriously weaken our own rights and only make things better for those in power.
Take action now to save our Human Rights Act.
