Protect journalists in Northern Ireland: Take action now

Journalists in Northern Ireland are living behind bulletproof windows because paramilitary groups want to silence them. Despite rising threats, there have been zero prosecutions in these cases. Press freedom is under attack in the UK.
Since 2019 we have documented over 70 death threats, bomb threats and acts of violence towards journalists in Northern Ireland. Most threats came from armed paramilitary gangs. Not one has been prosecuted to date.
Some reporters now live behind bullet-proof windows, reinforced doors, panic-buttons and CCTV. Many people assume Northern Ireland’s conflict is over. Yet some journalists are receiving more threats of serious violence from paramilitaries than ever before.
If those who seek the truth are intimidated into silence, corruption will flourish and human rights violations go unreported.
Our democracy depends on a free press.
We call for two urgent steps:
- A Media Safety Group - to coordinate an effective response to threats against journalists
- A Home Protection Scheme - so journalists at risk can secure their homes without paying the price for doing their jobs
No journalist’s life - in the UK or anywhere else - should be on the line for doing their job, for exposing the truth.
Add your voice. Email Justice Minister Naomi Long now and demand she protects media freedom.
