Many of those deaths occurred during Israel’s genocide in Gaza, where journalists have been targeted at an unprecedented scale. Around the world, journalists are being silenced through violence, imprisonment and censorship.

The UK: A Growing Threat to Press Freedom

Around the world — and here in the UK — the press is under increasing attack. The threats may be less visible in the UK, but they are growing. Some journalists face legal intimidation, online abuse, smear campaigns and intense political pressure.

When this happens, independent reporting is stifled and public trust is eroded by disinformation and coordinated campaigns aimed to discredit journalists speaking truth to power.

A Threat to the Press Is a Threat to Accountability

Across the world, authoritarian regimes are tightening their grip on media, stifling independent reporting and flooding the public with disinformation. When journalism is under attack, it’s not just about silencing reporters — it’s about controlling the narrative and avoiding scrutiny.

Attacks on journalism are often a warning sign: when free speech is suppressed, facts are buried, and human rights abuses go unchallenged. This is happening in the UK and around the world, where even in countries with established press freedoms, these threats are rising.

Expose the Truth. Defend the Right to Report It.

Independent journalism and human rights work share a common mission: exposing injustice and holding the powerful to account.

Amnesty International stands with journalists who investigate abuses, uncover facts and speak truth to power – often at great personal risk. We investigate human rights violations, challenge repressive laws, and campaign against attacks on press freedom.

Because when the freedom to report is lost, so is accountability.
Power operates in the dark. Injustice goes unchallenged.

Add Your Voice to Defend Press Freedom

Now, more than ever, it’s crucial to protect the right to report.
Add your voice to stand with those risking everything to uncover the truth.

Together, we can ensure that press freedom is upheld and that journalists can work without fear of persecution or oppression.
Your support helps shine a light on injustice, ensuring the truth is uncovered and that the powerful are held accountable.
