Anish Kapoor is one of today’s most influential contemporary artists. Born in India and based in London, he is best known for monumental public works such as Cloud Gate in Chicago (2004), Marsyas at Tate Modern (2002), and the Orbit for the London Olympics (2012).
As an Amnesty International UK ambassador, Anish has supported high profile initiatives defending freedom of expression and opposing censorship. In 2012, Kapoor produced Gangnam for Freedom — a parody of the international hit Gangnam Style featuring artists and human rights activists — to show solidarity with Chinese artist Ai Weiwei and highlight the importance of free speech.
Knighted in 2013 for services to visual arts, Kapoor has exhibited internationally across cities including New York, Tokyo, London, and Buenos Aires, and his work continues to combine striking innovation with a deep engagement in social and political dialogue.
Kapoor has also engaged publicly on issues affecting displaced people and refugees, in 2018 he donated his Genesis Prize award funds to charities supporting refugees and displaced communities around the world.
