Letter to Minister for Border Security and Asylum concerning asylum decision-making, June 2025
On 16 June 2025, Amnesty UK wrote to the Minister for Border Security and Asylum concerning the dramatic fall in the asylum grant rate under the current Government following its implementation of various provisions of the Nationality and Borders Act 2022 relating to asylum decision-making.
Our letter gave particular attention to decisions on claims by Afghans seeking asylum, while also drawing specific attention to decisions on the claims of Eritreans and Iranians. Amnesty has called on the Government to repeal relevant provisions of the Nationality and Borders Act 2022 and warned about the consequences of misapplying the Refugee Convention and wrongly refusing asylum to refugees.
Our letter also raised concerns regarding the Home Office pause on making decisions on the asylum claims of Syrians.
