Amnesty UK briefing on Part 1 (Border Security) for House of Lords Committee

This Briefing concerns Part 1 (Border Security). It explains what this Part of the Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Bill reveals of the policy and purpose that underpins this Bill

That policy and purpose remains largely the same as the Government's predecessor - to deter and prevent people seeking asylum in the UK.

Chapter 1 of Part 1 (The Border Security Commander) exemplifies this by the narrow focus of the Commander's remit to maximise the effectiveness of action to minimise threats to the UK's border (expressed as including the journeys by which many people seek asylum), with no express concern for any other consideration such as the human rights and wellbeing of the people making these journeys. Chapter 2 of Part 1 (Other Border Security Provision) is replete with measures to obstruct people making these journeys, to the extent of further criminalisation of them (for their being exploited and endangered by making these journeys).
