UK: Sajid Javid’s comments on asylum-seekers go against both law and basic humanity

Responding to Home Secretary Sajid Javid’s comments on asylum-seekers arriving in the UK, Steve Valdez-Symonds, Amnesty UK’s Refugee and Migrant Rights Director, said:

"The Home Secretary's comments go against both law and basic humanity. Every person seeking asylum in the UK has the right to be treated with dignity and respect and have their asylum claim carefully and sincerely considered.

"By expressly calling for people's claims to be refused before they can be assessed, he is actively promoting the same unjust and harmful practices exposed by last year's Windrush scandal."
