Responding to Wes Streeting’s messages and comments on Gaza, Kristyan Benedict, Amnesty International UK’s Crisis Response Manager, said:

“Wes Streeting was right to say Israel is committing war crimes against Palestinians. What is damning is that the Prime Minister and his government have continued business as usual despite overwhelming evidence from the UN and human rights organisations of war crimes and genocide.

“Keir Starmer should be reminded that Israel has killed over 21,000 children in Gaza since October 2023, according to UNICEF - including dozens since the so-called 'ceasefire’.

“The UK must answer why it refuses to demand Israel’s full withdrawal from the occupied Gaza Strip, the complete lifting of the unlawful blockade, a halt to all trade or cooperation that sustains war crimes and genocide, and why it still hasn’t sanctioned Israeli officials responsible for the killing of children and other civilians.

“Failing to take these steps makes the UK a bystander to a genocide, the mass killing of children and the destruction of international law.”
