We are deeply saddened to hear of the death of photojournalist Paul Conroy - a courageous and compassionate storyteller whose work brought truth to light in the darkest of times.
Paul was a brilliant and steadfast supporter of Amnesty. He worked tirelessly to stand up for journalists at risk and to defend the vital role of a free press.
In 2016, he accepted an Amnesty award on behalf of Marie Colvin, honouring her extraordinary legacy with humility and grace.
Over many years, he served as a thoughtful and committed judge for Amnesty’s prestigious Media Awards, championing fearless journalism and emerging talent alike.
In 2014, he delivered our Annual Human Rights Lecture in Belfast, moving and inspiring all who attended.
Beyond his extraordinary professional achievements, Paul was a lovely, passionate and dedicated human rights supporter.
He inspired younger photographers and encouraged all of us at Amnesty with his integrity, warmth and unwavering belief in the power of truth.
He will be deeply missed. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues at this difficult time.
