In response to recent incidents of racist violence across Scotland, Neil Cowan (Scotland Programme Director, Amnesty International UK), has said:
"Amnesty International stands with those experiencing racist and Islamophobic hatred and violence in Scotland.
It is the perpetrators of violence who are to blame for their actions, but recent violent incidents have not taken place in a vacuum. They have occurred in a context in which individuals and groups are seeking to sow hate and division in our communities. And at a time when racist and Islamophobic tropes and narratives are becoming ever-more visible in our public discourse, including from some politicians in Scotland.
All of Scotland must reject the use of language that scapegoats entire groups of people and pits the rights of some communities against others. We simply cannot allow the normalisation of this kind of hateful and deeply cynical politics."
