Uganda: Tabloid gay list publication 'chilling'

Amnesty called the publication in a Ugandan tabloid newspaper of a list of names of people accused of being gay the day after President Museveni signed the Anti-Homosexuality Bill into law a ‘chilling development’, which confirms the organisation’s fears about the Bill.

Sarah Jackson, Amnesty’s Africa Deputy Regional Director said:

“The publication of a list of names of people suspected of ‘being gay’ in a Ugandan tabloid is a chilling development.

“This confirms Amnesty’s fear that the Ugandan government’s approval of the Act would trigger a witch-hunt against people purely on the basis of their actual or perceived sexual orientation.

“It is an incredibly frightening time for LGBTI people in Uganda as their own government has endorsed this persecution.”
