Rights In Focus - End The War On Rights (by Emma Norton)
Overview
Critics of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) and Human Rights Act (HRA) are quick to use service personnel to advance their positions. They are, however, less quick to recognise the immense role the ECHR and HRA have played in protecting the human rights of service personnel. This is despite the fact that the HRA has been used time and time again to protect ordinary service personnel from the failures of military leadership and government.
In this piece, Emma Norton from the Centre for Military Justice confronts some of the misinformation in this area and shares a number of stories where the HRA has helped service personnel and their families, as well bringing about much needed reforms that have improved service life. It provides a compelling argument of why weakening the protections of the ECHR is bad for the armed forces, and bad for all of us.
